Mary Smith

Tel: 01530 834717

Mary was brought up in a Christian family and attended a Methodist church and Sunday School in a small village in the Peak District. She stopped going to church in her mid-teens. After finishing Teacher Training she moved to Coalville to teach in a local primary school, married Brian, and had a son and a daughter.

After having her children she had a strong desire to go back to church, but found it difficult to pluck up the courage to do so. Then, after an invitation from someone she knew, she started to come to St David’s where she found the people welcoming and friendly. She was confirmed in 1988 and started to attend St. David’s regularly. Over the years she has been involved in many aspects of church life and the people of St. David’s have become like a second family.

A number of years ago, Mary felt called by God to the role of Churchwarden and she is still serving him in this way. She is also part of the Worship Team and a member of the Pastoral Link visiting team.

Chris Liggins

Tel: 01530 451215

Chris was born in London and moved into the area when she was in her teens. Although always considering herself a believer she only started attending church when she became a Brownie Leader, attending the monthly church parades. Drawn in by the welcome and friendliness offered to her by St David’s she discovered true faith in the late 1980s and was confirmed at the cathedral. She has served on the PCC for many years and was drawn to the office of churchwarden this year.

Chris has two daughters, one living with her family in Australia, and four grandchildren and works in the local school nursery.

Chris is a member of the worship team and is organising the St David’s Summer Fair this year.

Revd. Neil Griffiths – Assistant Curate

Tel: 01530 835024

Email: curate@stdavidschurchbroomleys.org.uk

Neil was brought up in a Christian home and can’t remember a time when he didn’t go to church. He went to university in Portsmouth and studied surveying, a profession he worked in for 6 years before changing to managing a government grant programme for building homes for those who can’t afford to buy for themselves. Neil then spent more than 20 years working to improve the housing prospects of those unable to meet their own needs without help.

Neil has 2 sons (Christopher 26 and Alexander 21) and a step daughter (Robyn 24) and has been married to Lesley for 11 years.

Neil responded to God’s call on his life and attended Queen’s Foundation in Birmingham for 2 years studying theology, before being Ordained in 2014 and beginning his 3 year Curacy at St. David’s.

Alan was born in Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

Both his parents shared a love of music and singing. This family passion ensured that Alan became a member of his local church choir, Holy Trinity, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, where both his Father and Uncle had also been active members. Alan gained the positions of soloist and head chorister in association with the Royal School of Church Music and was also crucifer.

Attending St David’s church from the early 70’s, Alan became a chorister and, latterly, a member of the music group.

Flames of faith were re-kindled when, in 1998, as soloist singing in the musical “Pharisee” by Roger Jones, the song “How I love you Lord” touched and encouraged Alan to re-examine his beliefs.

Two phrases that mean a lot to Alan are:

“When words fail music speaks” – Hans Christian Anderson.

“When you sing, you pray twice” - said to Alan by the late Church Lads’ and Church Girls’ Brigade choirmaster.

He has lived in Coalville since 1970, has two older sisters and, in 1978, married Ann who is also a member of St David’s Church.

The “Sankey” family motto is “the sacred key of heaven is faith”.

John Alan Sankey
