Message for October 2019

‘Farewell but not Goodbye’

My first article for St. David’s magazine was in October 2012 and in it I wrote these words:

“It was God’s Holy Spirit that led me to a retreat to pray about where my ministry might lead me and he showed me the characteristics of that ministry, but not where it would be!

It was God’s Holy Spirit that led you to pray about the type of person you might need at St. David’s and record this in your profile.

It was God’s Holy Spirit that remarkably matched the two together and caused me to apply for the post and you to appoint me as your next minister”

I used this picture to describe what God had in store for us and at my licensing service we opened with ‘To God be the Glory’.

So it is some seven years later that I give thanks to God for blessing St. David’s with the power of God’s Holy Spirit falling amongst us in our services, our home groups, our prayer, our work in the community and schools and in ourselves and for guiding us in the direction of God’s Church during the last few years.

I pray that you will always be open to God’s Holy Spirit working among you and to the gifts he wishes to bless you with. Jesus said those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life, meaning of course the gift of the Holy Spirit.

My prayers have always shown me the love that God has for you at St. David’s and that he wished this holy place to be a place of welcome and a beacon of light in our community, a place where we value others and a place of healing and reconciliation and sharing his grace. I pray that you will continue with this journey in Christ, working together for the glory of God.

Kath and I are leaving this journey with you at this point, feeling so blessed to have been part of it and leaving as different people than when we first arrived. Seeing God’s healing, seeing his reconciliation, seeing the light of Christ shine over our community, seeing the life of prayer develop to sustain and seeing God’s love for the people of his Church here and in our community. When I arrived I knew that St. David’s was the Church for me to minister in and now I know that God has asked me to lay this down for others to be part of the journey of faith in Christ with you.

We have met many special people, we have known the joy of Christ with you and the lament of Christ with you, we have laughed and cried with you and we have made friends with you.

This then is Farewell and definitely not Goodbye.
