November 2019 Interregnum News and Updates
So here we stand at the start of our interregnum or vacancy. When Andy first told the churchwardens that he and Kath were to retire, it came as a complete surprise. Into that stunned reaction then came the thought “It’s three months away — we have time to prepare.” As I said last week, “Where did that three months go?” In fact, where did the last seven years go?
We had an incredible day on 13th October with a personal and moving service, followed by the usual excellent St. David’s shared lunch. Our catering team coordinated us brilliantly and managed to produce a couple of whole salmon — something Andy remembered from his interview day. And, of course, there was cake! An appearance by some of our most “talented” singers paid tribute to the couple. Andy and Kath brought so much to St. David’s and we are sad to see them go, but wish them a long and happy retirement. They have since told me that they were completely overwhelmed by the day and your gifts and cards.
I am being asked, “What happens next?” The search for our new incumbent will not be a short process, I’m afraid; the diocese plans to rent out the vicarage in 6 monthly spells, and previous interregnums bear witness that we might be looking at between 12-
In the meantime, it falls to the churchwardens to maintain the smooth running of the church and PCC. Andy had contacted various clergy on our behalf, so we have quite a few leaders and preachers who have committed to various services over the next few months. There are a few gaps and I am trying to fill these; it may be that we have to be a little creative and vary some of our services. We do however have a very strong and dedicated worship team, music group and choir, so I hope that you will have very little concern.
St. David’s is a strong church with a lot of talent to call upon. It is important at this time that we stand firm together, completely Christ-
At a recent home group meeting we read from Philippians Chapter 4:
4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
I thought at the time, and still do, that this was talking to me as I contemplated the task ahead. I pray that we can continue to rejoice in the Lord and our fellowship together whilst working together to support our church and community and that the peace of God will wrap round us all.
