Message for March 2019

The crib, the cross and the crown and you!

We have reached that time in our Christian calendar where we move away from the celebration surrounding the birth of a baby -that sign from God our Father that he thinks we are OK and actually quite precious to him - to the crucifixion on a cross and the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ, God’s son. We go through this cycle every year, but every year, if you engage with it, you will move deeper into understanding who God is for you, through the person of Jesus Christ, in the power of the person of the Holy Spirit. This season of course is called LENT.

Traditionally, Lent is a time of spiritual preparation: self-examination, penitence, self-denial, study, and preparation that is focused on knowing God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Our modern and post-modern world would perhaps focus on ‘giving something up for Lent’, like chocolate, or alcohol, or sugary drinks, or even social networking, in response to the excesses of Christmas. The self-denial is focused on our own health and wellbeing rather than the wellbeing of our relationship with God, Father, Son & Holy Spirit and the wellbeing of others. This year, then, at St David’s we are launching three initiatives focused on wellbeing.

The first is our Lent Bible Study Groups, based on a study called ‘Lentwise’ by Paula Gooder, a well-respected theologian. The study is in five sessions to help us with the spiritual essentials to survive life’s storms, using fresh insights from John’s Gospel. Look out for the sign-up sheets in Church for the Bible Study Groups on offer and sign up for one. If you don’t want to sign up for a group, we will be making available to purchase ‘Catching the Wave’, 40 days of Bible reflections and prayer guide for our life today, during Lent.

The second initiative is focused on the wellbeing of others and encourages each of us to think about those in our area who are in poverty and need and to respond during Lent by filling a brown paper bag (supplied) with requested food and other articles for Kingsgate. See the article in this magazine by Liz Blacklock which explains this initiative in more detail.

Finally, we are given the opportunity on Sunday 17th March, to respond in gratitude and thanksgiving to God’s blessings on our lives in joy and in suffering, by giving back to him through St David’s Church, a proportion of our finances and time and gifts. St David’s is of course, your Church and whatever you give or don’t give determines the future of the Church here in Broom Leys. We will be writing to everyone about our Thanksgiving Day on 17th March and the opportunities for you to take part in the life of the Church as part of your Christian life and commitment. Bring back your pledges of time, talents and treasures on that day; we will give thanks to God for all he is to us and your pledges will be used for the mission and pastoral ministry of St David’s in 2019/2020.

Belonging to a Church helps us understand what God-given wellbeing is all about. May this Lent be a time when you focus on your own spiritual and physical wellbeing, the wellbeing of others, and that of the Church that nurtures you and the God who loves you, as we respond to the crib, the cross and the crown!
