Lent - A Season of Preparation

By the time you read this pancakes, Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday  will be a distant memory and we will be well on our way towards Easter. “How did that happen”, I hear you cry, “we’ve only just recovered from Christmas?” Well, because Ash Wednesday happens 46 days before Easter Sunday, and because Easter Sunday moves around the calendar, apparently Ash Wednesday can occur anytime between 4th February and 10th March.

Traditionally Lent has involved Christians in 40 days of prayer, penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving and self-denial. I suspect that it is the element of self-denial that has become the modern day practice of giving things up for Lent. Through these and other acts, Lent helps us to prepare our hearts and our minds for the coming of Holy Week and Easter.

But there is a danger that this might give the impression (to some outside the church) that Lent is a time for being grumpy, with lots of giving up of things; but nothing could be further from the truth. We can also prepare through doing new things and through doing different things. For example:

So there are many different ways in which we can mark the season of Lent and prepare for Easter, but whatever we do and however we prepare we must remember that this season is about preparation for the coming of Easter. Lent is not somewhere to stop and stay, we are on a journey to the Cross of Good Friday and the empty tomb of Easter Sunday.
